NAGAAA Softball

The North American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance (NAGAAA)

NAGAAA is the host of the Gay Softball World Series – the largest annual predominantly gay sporting event in the world. Created in 1977, NAGAAA is a nonprofit international sports organization comprised of men and women dedicated to promoting organized softball competition for the gay and lesbian community.

Currently, over 680 teams in 37 leagues across North America make up the 10,000+ members of NAGAAA. Teams representing these leagues participate in the NAGAAA Gay Softball World Series (GSWS), hosted each year in a different member city.

The NAGAAA Open Division teams consist of men/women mixed teams or exclusively male teams. Within the NAGAAA Open Division, there are four levels of play - A, B, C, and D. These division designations pertain to the competitive level of play, with "A" being the most skilled, and the "D" division supporting the more recreational level of play.

In addition to hosting the Gay Softball World Series each year, NAGAAA is also dedicated to supporting the continued success of its member associations. Beyond that, NAGAAA is committed to expand into new cities, helping new gay and lesbian softball leagues to form, grow and stabilize so that they can also become contributing NAGAAA members. Finally, NAGAAA helps the host city’s gay and lesbian community by directing surplus funds generated by the GSWS and thousands more raised by the annual NAGAAA Open Softball Division Talent Show to charities named by the host committee. In 2006, the NAGAAA Open Softball Division Talent Show generated over $25,000.00 that was distributed to grass roots organizations in the gay and lesbian community of Ft. Lauderdale.

Yes – NAGAAA hosts a week long championship tournament each year but it does much more than that!

SVGLS became a member city in the Spring of 2012. With our first year in NAGAAA we sent the “D” Division Champions Men@Play D team to the World Series in Minneapolis where they finished 33rd out of 48. Not a bad place to start! The team came back from the World Series, Coached by Jon William Green and Ed Hamilton with an new energy now seeing what the event was all about. They all came back with a story, or many, of how they felt at the opening ceremony, seeing, meeting and playing against all the cities from all over the United States and Canada. One member exclaimed “I am going back.. People, you have no idea whats it is like to stand with thousands of people at the ceremonies and feel the energy of one of the largest LGBT sporting events in the world. Yeah we played softball, but we got to meet so many people and had a life changing experience! I am certainly going back!!”

I hope you take the time to check out the NAGAAA website.
